Mersedeh Proctor is the Principal and Managing Director of Mercator ELT.

My love of the English language and literature has led me to a life time of study and research in this field.   As an 18-year old, I found myself in England living in a host family and attending a private school learning English as a Foreign Language.  At that time, I had no idea that I would end up establishing and running a similar organization in the UK helping other students improve their English Language skills.

My educational and professional background spans many years of teaching and research in language teaching and Applied Linguistics at all levels: secondary, undergraduate, postgraduate and PH.D. supervision.   Very early in my teaching career, I was fortunate enough to become involved in a pioneering research project which laid the foundations of what is known today as English for “Special Purposes” – for example, Business, Science and Technology, Medicine, Law.

Whilst pursuing a most rewarding career at the University of Exeter teaching Applied Linguistics including teacher training, I was also acting as Academic Advisor to Mercator English Language Training which I had co-founded with three other Directors.

I am now the Principal and the Managing Director of Mercator with overall responsibilities for its academic management. The office team consists of:

Peter Margetts FCA, who acts as our Finance Director is a very experienced Charter Accountant who keeps us up-to-date with government rules and regulations.

Janet Margetts, who has had a long career in Accountancy, is our Company Secretary and is in charge of Pay Roll and billing. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the management of our financial affairs.

Birgit Hanke is our Director of Studies and the Centre Supervisor in Exeter. Birgit has a Ph.D .in Applied Linguistics including language teaching. She has taught English and German for many years and has a 10-year history of working with us at Mercator.

Jackie Rescorlla, who has a Certificate in Business Administration, is our Administrator dealing with host family applications and data base, student allocations as well as all general enquiries.

We are assisted by an efficient team of Centre Supervisors whose role is to visit and select our host families, be in direct contact with all our students and group leaders in their areas, look after students’ general welfare and ensure the smooth running of all our programmes.  They are also on call for emergencies.

Our academic team consists of One-to-One Home Tuition teachers who can accommodate students in their own homes and tutors who teach both on our group programmes and offer 1-1 tuition at the students’ own place of residence.

Mercator English Language Training is the first and only language school based in Cornwall with British Council Accreditation. We registered as a Limited Company in 1987 in St. Austell which is close to the Eden Project. We applied for British Council Accreditation in 1996 in order to reassure our students of our expertise and professionalism.

Today, we offer English language courses and programmes throughout Cornwall, Devon and East Sussex.    The counties of Devon and Cornwall are situated in the far South-West and are among the most popular holiday destinations in the UK. Visitors can enjoy the best of rural Britain, dramatic coast lines with wooded cliffs and sandy beaches. Historical cities such as Plymouth, Exeter and Truro offer excellent entertainment venues, shopping centres and cultural attractions. For those who wish to be near London, we have host families and teachers in East Sussex which is only one hour by train from central London.

Our principles are:

  • Professional standard of tuition, tailored to individual needs
  • Cultural and linguistic integration through caring and hospitable host families
  • Combining language learning with the best recreational and leisure activities available in the area
