The South West, Plymouth
Plymouth is the largest city in the South West. It has a unique position in the seafaring history of the English nation. The Mayflower set sail from its port to discover the New World. It has been home to the activities of the merchant navy and many renowned explorers such Sir Francis Drake. Currently it is one of Britain’s major naval dockyards. Plymouth today offers its residents a uniquely rich cultural environment with its own university, several colleges, one of the nations major theatres (Theatre Royal), a marine college, many cinemas, leisure centres and museums. The city is served by an airport, a terminal for continental ferries, a major station on the main London Paddington to Penzance train line, and a large coach station for inter-city travel.
